New Victoria High School

New Victoria High

Photo:  Opened in 1914 as "Victoria College and High School", this building housed Victoria College in the years 1914-1915 and 1920-1921.
It is, of course, the present site of Victoria Senior Sec. School at the corner of Fernwood and Grant.

Overcrowding became so desperate at Victoria High School and College that the need for a new building was obvious.  A site was chosen half a mile to the north, at Fernwood and Grant, and a magnificent new school was planned.  In 1912 the cornerstone was laid by the Minister of Education, Dr. Henry Esson Young.  By the spring of 1914 the splendid building was complete.  For a little over a year (from the spring of 1914 to the end of the 1914-15 session) Victoria College occupied the third floor of the new Victoria College and High School (the present Victoria Senior Secondary School at Fernwood and Grant).
