George Pearkes, Senior

George Pearkes and Father

"My father, I have rather vague memories of him.  He was not tall, he was short...  and he was a keen horseman and used to hunt regular with the old Berkley Hounds outside of Watford.  They were an old established pack of fox hounds and I recall quite vividly one occasion when I couldn't have been more than five or six in which I was going for a walk with the governess and we saw the fox...  come across a little valley, and shortly after the hounds came by and then the hunt, followers, all the hunt servants were not in the traditional red of the hunting field, but that particular pack had a golden or yellow hunt uniform.  It's rather a striking contrast.  I remember that very clearly and I think that I inherited my father's love of horses and hunting."
