There are two transcriptions available here: that of the pamphlet Opinions of Several Gentlemen of the Law, On the Subject of Negro Servitude, in the Province of Nova-Scotia (1802); and that of James DeLancey's complaint of trespass (1803).

The pamphlet was originally digitized and converted to text with an OCR program; because of the archaic typeface, much proofreading and correction was required. The complaint, a very badly hand-written document, was painfully deciphered and the text was typed in. Both transcript documents were then marked up according to the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) P4 encoding recommendation (an XML format). XSL transforms were then used to generate the HTML for the web pages.

XML format (TEI P4)

These use a subset of the TEI P4 DTD, generated by the TEI Pizza Chef. The subset DTD is included in the ZIP archive files below. You may need to modify the DOCTYPE statement in the XML files to point to wherever you put the DTD.

To save the XML files to your system, right click or option click, select "Save target as" or "Save link as" (the exact procedure depends on your browser).
